Can You Foster a Child in the UK with a Disability?

What truly matters is your ability to meet the needs of the child in your care and offer a loving, stable environment. How Family Fostering Partners Supports Foster Carers with Disabilities

At Family Fostering Partners, we know that each carer’s situation is unique. Here’s how we can support you in your journey to foster a child in the UK:

1) Tailored Assessments

We offer comprehensive and personalised assessments that focus on your abilities, support systems, and personal circumstances. Our goal is to understand how your disability might affect your daily life and what adaptations can be made to ensure a successful fostering experience.

2) Accessibility and Adaptations

We ensure that our training, support groups, and meetings are fully accessible to you. Your Link Worker or Assessing Social Worker will discuss any required adaptations to ensure fostering works for you.

3) Ongoing Training and Support when you Foster a Child in the UK

Fostering can be challenging, but you won’t have to face it alone. We provide ongoing training and 24/7 support, including access to external support resources like Foster Talk. Our goal is to make sure you have everything you need to succeed in fostering a child in the UK.

4) Financial Support Available when you Foster a Child in the UK

We offer competitive allowances and professional fees to help you cover the costs of fostering. If you’re giving up work to foster, you may qualify for our “Be There to Care” financial scheme, ensuring that you can focus on providing the best care possible.

Common Concerns When Fostering with a Disability

If you’re considering fostering a child in the UK but have concerns about your disability, we can help address them:

1) Can I Meet a Child’s Needs?

Each child has unique needs, and we work hard to match them with the right foster carer. Your ability to care for the child will be assessed on a case-by-case basis. Many individuals with disabilities successfully foster children, and careful matching plays a significant role in that success.

2) What About My Own Health?

Your health and well-being are top priorities. We’ll have open discussions about how your health may affect your fostering role. Regular supervision with your Link Worker will allow for ongoing updates regarding your health and well-being.

3) Medical Check Before You Foster a Child in the UK

Before fostering a child in the UK, you’ll need to complete a medical check with your GP, which will be reviewed by an independent doctor. This ensures that you are “Fit to Foster.” Once approved, these checks are conducted regularly to ensure your continued well-being.

4) How Will a Child Respond to My Disability?

Children are often incredibly adaptable and understanding. Having a foster parent with a disability can provide valuable life lessons in empathy, resilience, and acceptance. Your Link Worker will be available to help you address any questions a child might have.

Success Stories: Foster Carers with Disabilities

At Family Fostering Partners, we’ve witnessed many success stories where foster carers with disabilities have made a tremendous difference in the lives of children.

Tyler’s Story:

Tyler, supported by our Welsh office, stood on an IED whilst on foot patrol in Afghanistan in 2009. As a result, Tyler lost both legs above the knee, and badly damaged his arm. Tyler is an ambassador for ‘Pilgrim Bandits’ who raise funds for expeditions, and grants which provide injured service personnel and emergency services personnel with specialist equipment and wheelchairs. Tyler is also captain of Team GB’s para ice hockey team.

Alongside his wife Katie, they have supported many young people who require foster care, especially teenagers. On building connections with the young people in his care, Tyler explains “I’ll play computer games with them. I’m still active in following all the sports, the stuff on TV… but not so much their music, their music is rubbish!’”

Tyler also explains what it is like to work with Family Fostering Partners “It’s like a big family group. A lot of people know each other. If you’re having a rough time, you can always speak to each other ‘how would you deal with this’, ‘how would you deal with that?’ It is just like a big family.”
